The Tulip Land
Sunrise in Hoorn, Netherlands
Photography is so much more than just capturing beautiful images; it's about building meaningful connections with nature, the land, and the wonderful local communities we encounter. It's a journey that fosters a deep sense of belonging and mutual respect.
My first—and indeed not my last—international photography workshop took place in Hoorn, a city and municipality in the northwestern Netherlands. We searched for the perfect location to photograph the tulip fields. From sunrise to sunset, we wandered across acres of tulip land, seeking extraordinary scenes that reflected the beauty of the tulips. From the moment the sun peeked over the horizon, casting a golden light on the dewdrops adorning the tulip petals, I felt a sense of magic around me. The mist in the trees and the crescent moon hanging in the sky added to the serene atmosphere, making for an unforgettable experience.
As I captured the bright reds, sunny yellows, elegant whites, and stunningly diverse blooms, I found myself deeply connected to the stories of the farmers behind these fields. One farmer, in particular, passionately shared his dedication to preserving a historic windmill. Listening to him reminded me of my grandfather's coconut farm and the importance he placed on honoring our land. It's incredible how these narratives connect us, echoing the love and effort that generations have poured into nurturing the soil.
The tulips paired with the iconic windmill truly highlight the Netherlands' unique standing in the world. The annual Dutch tulip festival, held at the breathtaking Keukenhof Gardens, attracts over a million visitors each year, reaching up to 1.5 million during peak times. This extraordinary turnout showcases the dedication and hard work of the farmers. During our time there, we had the privilege to meet some of these passionate farmers. Their commitment to quality was evident as they shared their meticulous processes—from selecting the finest tulip bulbs and using advanced technology to combat pests, to the careful, hands-on approach they take in tending to every flower.
While my camera captured the beauty of this experience, it's the heartfelt connections I forged with the breathtaking landscapes and the wonderful people that will stay with me forever.
